ABOUT: Between Frames

I’m Elaine. I make documentary films and tell stories. I live in Appalachia. I’m a mom of two and work alongside my husband and cinematographer, Curren.

Between Frames is where I slow down and share what doesn’t always make it onto the screen. I write about storytelling, cinema, philosophy, ethics, and place. For me, storytelling is a reflection of how we live, how we care, and how we pay attention to each other and to the places we inhabit.

Between Frames is a place to think out loud about stories that raise ethical questions, challenge our perspectives, and help us navigate the complexities of creative work and connection. Through the lens of nonfiction filmmaking, I try to gather meaning in the in-between moments.

Why I'm Here (And What This Space Is For)

I make films. That’s my full-time job—and it’s what I’ll keep doing.

Writing helps me process the world. This is where I reflect on what I’m learning, unlearning, and still figuring out. It’s a living notebook.

But I’m not trying to turn my writing into a hustle. I don’t want to feel the pressure of more deadlines piled onto already full days. This space is meant to be quieter.

That said—if you become a paid subscriber, thank you. It’s like buying me a coffee each month. It keeps my small engine running and supports my filmmaking. I don’t offer fancy perks, but I do offer my time.

If you're a paid subscriber, you're always welcome to reach out for a one-on-one chat. I mean that. We can talk about your own work, ideas, frustrations, or just share where we’re at. And if you're not a storyteller yourself, I’m happy to use our time to document the voice of someone in your life (an elder, a parent, a friend). I’ll guide a 30-minute conversation, and send you the audio and transcript for your family archive. These conversations are always meaningful.

Whether you’re reading for free or supporting out of the goodness of your heart, thank you for being here.
